Stand Up for Love- Wedding Industry Protest in Germany Nationwide

Thousands of wedding professionals participated in the nationwide “Stand Up for Love Campaign” -Politicians signals willingness to talk.

The Federal Association of Wedding Service Providers (BVdH) and  Hamburg wedding service professionals, “beyond Tales” Wedding Planners and “Ankatrin Andresen” Bridal Stylist, hosted empty banquet tables in a joint nationwide campaign in eleven German cities on June 9, 2020 – a symbol of the wedding industry, which was badly affected by the corona crisis.

Several hundred wedding service providers gathered on June 9, 2020 in eleven cities nationwide to draw attention to the precarious situation sof the wedding industry in the Corona crisis, as the industry is already experiencing losses in the billions (capital.de). Under the current hygiene conditions, empty banquet tables were set up at all of the campaign locations to make it clear that the wedding industry has been at a standstill since March this year – weddings are not taking place or, depending on the state, take place under unreasonable conditions.

The government has kept silent for too long and measures have been formulated too weakly, so that newlyweds either postponed or canceled their wedding due to uncertainty or were unable to have their wedding held due to ban on events and gatherings. This leads to a year without income for thousands of wedding service providers across Germany. Income that can no longer be generated retrospectively. The result is uncertainty, fear of existence and bankruptcy.

The campaign was supported by an online campaign, in which thousands of wedding service professionals and bridal couples showed solidarity on their social media channels by painting pink hearts on their wrists, the striking symbol of the initiative, along with the use of hashtag #standupforlove.

“We are happy that our industry, which consists of so many different trades, has come together all over Germany today,” commented Hamburg initiators Sarah Weinhold-Gramer, Liv Schneider and Ankatrin Andresen. “We need a dialogue with politics and a realistic look at weddings when finding new regulations. We are a responsible and professional industry, we have solutions and options, but we need support and an open ear for politics.

Talks between the Federal Association of Wedding Service Providers and members of the FDP faction will take place in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament in the coming week. The Rhineland-Palatinate FDP and the Baden-Württemberg SPD also invited the association to talks.
